Brief Introduction of Shenzhen Industrial Design Association

Shenzhen Industrial Design Profession Association is a non-profit social and local body corporate. It is voluntary formed by industrial design enterprises and public institutions which could provide research and development, production and service for industrial product.

As soon as launched in 2007, it had gotten an enthusiastic response and support from numerous related enterprises and public institutions. During the preparation time, it had received applications from 59 national brand manufacturers which include Fiyta, Greatwall, Skyworth, TCL, Changhong, and positive support and help from various competent departments and coherent units. On June 2008, Shenzhen Industrial Design Association was formally established through the first general meeting of Shenzhen Bureau of Civil Administration.

After its establishment, Shenzhen Industrial Design Association will on the basis of “communicating, blending and growing”, dedicate to leading the local design industry to the world, with a view to integrating resources in design industry, achieve tight combination with industrial manufacturing by exploiting the building-up effect, it will also forward the creation, communication and cooperation inside the industry and the development of it. Therefore, we will take advantage of this platform to build a creative industrial park and design industrial union in Shenzhen and Hong Kong as well as developing the intra-industry training. We are going to make unremitting efforts to expose local industrial design to the international market and trying to be the vector and pioneer in converting “Made in Shenzhen” to “Created in Shenzhen”.

Shenzhen Industrial Design for 30 years

30 years of reform and opening up, 30 years of independent innovation and 30 years industrial design development of Shenzhen 

In the 1980s, some of China`s early industrial designers began to come into contact with the design of Western thought, lead to the budding of industrial design in China. Guangdong and other coastal areas, benefited from good economic environment, industrial design companies leading in the scale and level. 

As its unique geographical location and innovations in the spirit of reform, after 30 years of development, industrial design industry in Shenzhen has begun to take shape. According to statistics, there are about 200 design firms in Shenzhen, accounting for 70% of the amount in Guangdong Province, equivalent to 49% of the nation. As an R & D and innovation-intensive city, Shenzhen has achieved vigorously support from local government, will create "design" as an urban development strategy, it has attracted multiple design forces at home and abroad. 

From the "world factory" to "design city"

In 2003, Shenzhen set the "cultural city" as a development strategy, to create "design city" is an important measure of strategic objectives. Shenzhen with its open, innovative modern urban culture provides more opportunities for the growth of designer. Well-known large and medium-sized enterprises such as Konka, Huawei, TCL, Flyta, ZTE, Skyworth, ebohr, Foxconn, and Sannuo, professional industrial design companies such as newplan, artopcn and Maixi, they create a group of works in a wide influence at home and abroad.  

Some of the design companies even combine the design, manufacture and the whole industrial chains together, provide one-stop solution for product, value of high-end services which industrial design as its core competitiveness amounting to billions.  

It is understood that more than 10 years, Shenzhen designers have access to almost all the world`s top design competitions and international awards show, also received more and more concerned by the international design community many designs were collected at all types of museums, galleries in France, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Japan.  

In Hong Kong Designers Association of the Exhibition, Shenzhen is the city where local designers own the largest and the highest awards.  

Former executive vice mayor of Shenzhen, Mr Liu had said that the industrial design is an integral part of the cultural city. Without Industrial design products, there would be no innovation, design city will becomes vague, great efforts to promote industrial design, including the development of creative industries is the key to the sustained economic development of Shenzhen. He said that the industrial design will further promote the Shenzhen industrial and high-tech industrial structure adjustment of the pace of sustainable development, the government will continue to give support  in industrial design education, industrial design theory, corporate brand development of industrial design, industrial design industrialization, and not only to make “Made in Shenzhen” to the world and also push the " Design in Shenzhen " to the world.

In this series of favorable circumstances, the design of the city of Shenzhen has achieved rapid economic development. According to incomplete statistics, from the size, the Shenzhen industrial design industry employees around 80,000 people which could on the top list of our country, according to the annual production value of 150 thousands yuan per capita basis, annual production value of design industry has made more than 12 billions yuan. We have reason to believe in government, business, community and the design industry`s own efforts and support, China will become a regional-global industrial design center after the Nordic, Japan and South Korea, China will become a global brand and design country from a manufacturing country, Shenzhen will become a real "design city" that could stand for Chinese design level.
